Art Supplies

One of the things I enjoy most about art is getting to try different supplies and media and seeing how you can make them work in the things you make. On this page, I'll list some supplies I enjoy using and link to where you can purchase them. The truth is, you can make art out of just about anything, so if something here seems too expensive, there are likely cheaper options that would allow you to try things out first. Do what you can with what you have, and most importantly, have fun!

Knolling Art Supplies

Travel Watercolor case

If you use tube watercolor paints like I do, this is a nice travel case with lots of space for new colors.

Turner Design Gouache

These are tube gouache paints that I often use like watercolor. They are vibrant and fun to use.

Koi Tube Watercolors

Less expensive watercolor set. Some of these paints aren't as heavily pigmented and so it may take some extra work to get bright colors, but these were what I used when I first learned watercolor so they have a special place in my heart.

Fine tip White Posca Pens

I LOVE these pens! The white goes on really white and they last a long time. Highly recommend.

Canson Watercolor Paper

A good watercolor paper. This pad of paper is cost effective and a solid place to start. I often cut these into smaller pieces to paint on.

Pentel Arts Hybrid Technica Pen .3mm

This is a very fine tipped pen. One thing I enjoy about it is that you can add water to lines drawn with this pen and it will release a little bit of its ink to blend BUT it will still retain the line you drew. You can get some neat effects with it this way.

Pentel Arts Aquash Water Brush

These are great for on-the-go. You can fill them up with water and use them with your watercolors without needing a cup to rinse them. Just squeeze the fillable part and wipe off the brush with a paper towel between colors.

Water Soluble Graphite Pencil

This pencil is another great on the go tool if you like ink wash or watercolor work. You can draw with it like a pencil and then use a brush loaded with water to blend it. It ends up looking like light washes of ink.

Princeton Neptune Brushes

I have the size 6 quill brush and I really enjoy it. This brush holds a lot of water and is great for less precise work. It's fun to pay with too as it can hold a lot of paint.

Multi size White Posca Markers

The marker versions of the Posca pen in 3 sizes. I find that the larger the pen, the less opaque the white.

Simply Simmons Watercolor Brushes

Nice little brushes. I often have one of these with me when painting.

Kneaded erasers

These erasers are nice because you can change their shape to fit whatever you need to erase. Great for lightening a sketch before going in with ink or watercolor.

Pentel Sign Pen

This pen is a cool black and is not water-fast. I use it in conjunction with the Hybrid Technica pen to do ink drawings and then use a wet brush to help with the shadows. This is a thicker pen and is fun to draw with.

X-acto knife

Just nice to have for trimming things, cutting shapes into things, sharpening pencils, etc.

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

A refillable brush pen you can take with you anywhere. This is waterfast ink and the brush tip is very satisfying to draw with. Very fun.

Dr. PH Martin’s Iridescent Gold Ink

A coppery-gold ink I like to brush on to add a little sparkle to my work. Once you try this ink, it's hard not to put it all over every piece...

Happy Arting!
