Half and Half Photos
I find photography a bit stressful. There are times, however, when I feel like being creative but cannot or don’t want to sit down and draw. So I grab my phone and start looking for things to take pictures of only to find myself overwhelmed by subject matter, composition, lighting, etc. I have discovered--in many areas of creativity-- that I can combat this type of overwhelm by narrowing my focus down to just one of these elements, and simplifying the others as much as possible. For this exercise, I choose composition, or the arrangement of the elements within the photo. I pay no attention to the subject matter and simply look for places where one surface or texture ends and another begins--specifically for places where the two meet at a straight line. I orient my camera so that this line of separation becomes the centerline (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) and snap my photo. It creates a really satisfying effect, especially when placed alongside other photos with this composition.
I also find that I can look back through old pictures I have on my various devices and find these same lines of separation. I can zoom in and crop these images for even more half-and-half photos. I enjoy this, because I like using and reusing photos I have stored away.
Try it out! Let me know how it goes!
